2D Design Principles

This assignment is an excellent display of 2D design, not difficult for the mind to grasp, but simple, merely using coloured paper, A3 size mounting board, a blade and quite a lot of glue.

The following are my illustrations of the 8 principles of 2D design, followed by an explanation after each image.

Rhythm
-The beat and movement of subject-

With the face of Medusa as the starting point, the eye will follow the snakes (Medusa's hair) as they coil and straighten.

Scale
-The difference in size between one shape and another-

The scale principle is shown by the drops of wax from the lit candle coming closer, where they get bigger in size compared to the first few drops.

Hierarchy
-The order of the object-

Hierarchy in this image is displayed in the form of the stages in life. Beginning as a baby, growing into a child, becoming a teenager, entering adulthood, and finally, old age.

Dominance
-One element to rule them all-

The dominant element intended in this image is my initials, SR (Syafiq Rasyid) as it is, well, the only thing that seems to make sense in this (i dont know what this is) image. For those of you who know about this stuff, you might notice its kind of an Illuminati thingy, but I assure you that wasnt intended.

Repetition
-The same thing over and over-

This is clearly representing repetition as the snowmen are all taking the same pose and almost identical to one another. (theyre supposed to be exactly the same but im not perfect... hahaha)

Symmetrical Balance
-Balance between elements- (hmm...)

This one might come across as a bit gay (cause theres two pairs of what look like men, with a heart between them) but the idea is symmetrical balance, i assure you. No reference to any sexuality intended.

Asymmetrical Balance
-Balance between balance, different elements- (what...)

I cannot tell you the theme of this image cause I dont know what snowmen and lightning and a question mark have in common, but it displays balance between balance. I dont really know exactly how to explain that, but thats what it is.

Movement
-The flow of the subject in one's art- (just go with the flow)

This was my first one, so its a bit messy, however, the movement is still kinda visible. Its up to you to decide whether the lines are moving up or down or squiggling sideways.

Unmasking Vincent

This masterpiece, edited by Nicholas Lee, Vanessa, Tiffany, Jessica, Namira, Suet Ying, Kelvin, Yee Zhe and Vincent, was filmed in various locations such as a stairwell and classroom in Taylor's Lakeside Campus and an abandoned site near Glenmarie. In this short film, we are enlightened on the life of Vincent, an unfortunate young man. He was born with hideous looks. His unpleasant appearance made him unable to get a job anywhere, he was beaten by his own family and friends and to top it all off, his girlfriend left him when he needed her the most. All of this combined drove him to the brink of insanity.

The Masks

When one takes a glance at this mask, the first thing that comes to mind is something disturbing or violence. If so, you're 100% right. This is the mask worn by the character Hannibal Lecter in the movie Silence of The Lambs, in which he was a cold-blooded, psychopathic cannibal serial killer. (yeah thats a lot of sick stuff) During his imprisonment, he was never let out of his full body restraints, including a straight-jacket. However, the mask gave the biggest impression on the audience as it neutralized Hannibal's greatest, most deadly weapon, his mouth. Whether it was his twisted words controlling your mind, or his teeth ripping through your flesh, he was equally deadly either way.

This mask brings a slightly lighter note along with it. This is the mask worn by actor Jim Carey in the movie The Mask. The mask belonged to the mischievous god, Loki. When worn, it takes over the host and unleashes the mischief within him. It grants him super speed, strength and also a certain smoothness with the ladies. It makes the hosts darkest of wishes become possible. However, in the wrong hands, the bearer of the mask will be almost unstoppable in his reign of evil. Don't ask me why his head turns green when he wears it though. I have no idea, haha.

Comedy?

Comedy: Comedy is a form of humor and comicality. Many people use comedy as a way to entertain others, and some use it for their own entertainment. There are many different types of comedy, various genres of it. For example, there's prop comedy, alternative comedy, physical comedy and many others. I for one am a huge fan of stand-up comedies and sitcoms.

This is Gabriel Iglesias, a Mexican-American stand-up comedian who was born and raised in San Diego, California. His jokes are mostly race and obesity related, which makes it way funnier seeing that he's half Mexican and doesn't exactly have the built body of a model ;) He tells jokes as stories, as things that have happened to him in his life. Highly entertaining, if you ask me.

One of the greatest silent comedians of all time, I PRESENT TO YOU, Mary Pickford! Mary Pickford was one of the few female comedians of her time. She began her comedic career in the early years of the 1900s. Her cause of popularity was mainly based on her innocent looks. Mary was named the most woman in the world in the 1920s, but due to some problems in early 1933, Mary retired.

Last, but not least, my favourite and fellow Malaysian, Dato' P. Ramlee! He created the most humorous movies and music, which has made a huge impact on Malaysians. For most of his life, he was the most famous person in Malaysia. Very well-known for his rare creativity. Legendary, he was. One to never be forgotten for his great talent.

In my opinion, different comedians have their own ways of expressing their humour. All unique in their own ways. Some in ways that only a certain amount of people can relate to.

Some genres of comedy, not many are fans of. But I must say, comedy is comedy. It's ludicrous all the same. :D

A self portrait is worth a thousand words. It can tell stories of magic and mystery or of nature and simplicity.
Though not animated, a self portrait has the capability to display heavy emotions and vividly describe the atmosphere of the world inside the picture. These works of art tend to be very realistic, and thus, expand the observer's imagination drastically. Different elements in a self portrait radiate their own meaning. For example, in the picture above, the presence of flowers surrounding the girl can be interpreted as symbols of delicacy, innocence, purity and beauty (not forgetting the nudity ;) hahaha ). The red skies can be interpreted as a symbol for the chaotic and difficult world the girl lives in.

Anime self portraits are highly detailed creations of a character in a fantasy world; an escape from the hardships of the cold hard reality we live in. If truly appreciated, we can successfully manipulate the story behind the picture, adjusting it as we see fit. It can be used to create a temporary satisfaction as in a world of fantasy, dreams come true and nothing is impossible. However, just because it is a fantasy world, that does not mean it is free of negative influence. For example, the dark and gloomy theme of the portrait above display the hardships and difficulties the character (Hiei) faces in his battle against evil.

My Self Portrait

Basically, this is two pictures of me, one of which i edited with the 'oh god why' meme to fit my personality.
It took me quite a while to successfully edit this picture as I have little to no experience or skills in photo editing. I slightly adjusted the contrast and brightness of both pictures to make me look my best. I chose this two year old picture as it is hard to find a picture of me showing my sexy shoulder (hehehe) ;) I am inspired by my personality, strange as it might sound, to pick myself up whenever times get rough, and brush off any burdens dragging me down in life. I want to show a different side of me, which I normally keep to myself.

Self Potrait

This is a self portrait of me, Syafiq Rasyid. In this piece of art, I have used materials such as rocks, a shuttlecock, coffee beans, a couple of leaves, paint and many others.

The best part about this craft I've made is that some of the materials I've used describe me in some way.

For example, the rocks for hair describes the fact that I am a hard-headed person. I used a shuttlecock for a mole because well, I've always been teased for having such a big mole right smack on my face and I have learnt to embrace it. I used leaves for the eyes because I kinda like green things around me and I appreciate natures surrounding me . the coffee beans on my nose describes how much i love the smell of the coffee. the based colour of the craft which is red was made from a poster colour mixed with PVA glue. the idea of mixing both of the materials is to stick the oats and other small things easily because i have less than 3 hours to finish this craft
